Tough birthday month to beat. 😅 One of the bes Tough birthday month to beat. 😅

One of the best parts (though there are many) about music is getting to sometimes travel to play. Explore the world while sharing with the world. It gets even better when you’re playing with friends, and even better still when your life partner can join you 🙂 we just played a wedding in Crete, Greece and then had the week to explore. I can’t come close to pinpointing the best part of this trip. Everything we did in Athens was on a whim though, and turned out amazing.

In the last 30 days, I’ve gotten to:
- See Bruno Mars, Silk Sonic, and Leon Thomas
- Go to Arkansas, and play music & sauna
- Turn 33, reject work and have date night 🙂
- See Earth, Wind & Fire (from workside)
- Travel to Greece

Next up! 3 private events this week, followed by a little sleep.
Recording is finished! Some of these songs were w Recording is finished!

Some of these songs were written 3 years ago; one of them written almost 3 weeks ago. I think they all capture the same snapshot of what I want to bring as an artist.

I’ve been a part of several records and studio sessions, but being a lead for a live session is a whole different experience. I’m excited to check these out in a couple weeks so I can get started on the next steps to getting these out to the world.

Thanks to the team who put their schedules to the side for a couple days to make this happen. Your talents inspire me to keep working and excited to start on the next project!

The opening of the keys solo on this darker tune - The opening of the keys solo on this darker tune - ‘Moonlit Mischief’

The saxophone solo starts with an open vamp that’s in the home key of the song, while the second solo - the keys solo - is given a much darker palate to start on. Carlos uses that space very well I think 🙂

Can’t wait to record all of these tunes Tuesday!

Sus chords 😎 (more below) The beginning of thi Sus chords 😎 (more below)

The beginning of this jazz tune starts very sneaky, minor, unison across the band. I use the sus chords here after the solos to brighten up the song and split out the parts. Bright, but comparatively dense.

Take it to the bridge 🎶 Rather than running f Take it to the bridge 🎶

Rather than running full forms like a jazz standard typically would, Jay chose to break his song, Memoirs, into the three separate sections, and each soloist solos over only that section. Each person got to solo over the section that highlighted their playing attributes best I believe, making the most natural, honest, musical memoir. Personally, I believe breaking up the solo sections felt like the most true representation of the song, since the three sections are so sonically different from one another. Jay’s section, heard here, was the B section.

This is the melody from my more ballad - esque jazz tune, ‘The Beauty of Affirmation.’ This song serves as a self-motivational space for me. The pacing allows for more melodic/expressive space vs. speed and complete language.

This part of the keyboard solo was such a vibe 😮‍💨

@losmusic2 taking a solo over @jaykillmanmusic ‘s song, ‘Memoirs.’ What started as a more modern jazz tune took a heavy, almost trap vibe.

@jaykillmanmusic is a great composer 🔥 This mo @jaykillmanmusic is a great composer 🔥

This modern jazz tune by Jay is titled ‘Memoirs.’ Short story: when Jay wrote this originally, it was called ‘untitled 2.’ I was really inspired by what he wrote, and I followed up that week with a tune of my own. At the time of the first gig with this song, I hadn’t named it. It happened to be the second song I’d written, so it also had ‘song no. 2’ as well 😂 for a short period of time, we had to be specific on gigs as to which unnamed second song we were playing.

Anyways, I really enjoy Jay’s writing, and I’m thankful that he’s allowed me to include Memoirs on the band’s album. Follow along for more clips (follow Jay as well)! I love jazz, but I also enjoy some electronic music, and playing in horn sections in funk/dance music. Each tend to a different part of music I enjoy as a saxophonist.

(Read below): an uplifting song! Maybe my favorit (Read below): an uplifting song!

Maybe my favorite song from my older tunes (I’m not sure, the band makes them all good 🥲). Somewhat upbeat groove-based jazz. I wouldn’t call this Latin by any stretch, but it makes me want to dance.

‘In Flight’ - is meant represent that space you’re in when you’re in the your zone. I’ve always felt this to be a sort of uplifting song. My first attempt at not writing too far in minor keys as we often do I think. That switch from minor base to a sus chord base feels so empowering I think!

If you like this, the link is in my bio, and Bandcamp Friday is today, so I see the full contribution. It’s actually the last Bandcamp Friday before we hit the studio! I appreciate all of you who read this far. I hope you appreciate the stories behind these songs. ❤️
Black cat anthem? 🌙 🐈‍⬛ The tail 😉 Black cat anthem? 🌙 🐈‍⬛

The tail 😉 end of my original song titled “Moonlit Mischief.” A good friend of mine said it made them think of a black cat tip-toeing around, and I liked that. Do you hear it too?

The idea was to make a song with more specific lines for the instruments, as opposed to just a chord sheet with rhythms.

Excited to get in the studio at the end of the month to record all these. Link to buy this live album is in my bio! And you’ll get the studio album for free as a thank you 🙂
